Space Dates
In this article:
Overview
Space dates are terms that a space owner can set for a specific space. Other users can view them, but cannot modify them. These dates are not just information, they are used throughout KanBo.
The space dates are:
- Start date – marks the beginning of the space’s active phase (when a project starts).
- End date – marks when the space (or the project it represents) is expected to be completed or finished.
From the higher level of the workspace, we can get a glimpse of the spaces in it, their progress, and deadlines.

Example: Space dates visible in the Education workspace dashboard.
If you use space cards, you can find an indicator there depending on the set end date of the space. The number of days left on the space card is calculated by adding up the remaining days until the space end date.

Example: The number of days left on the Green Week space card is 370. This is the number of days from today to the end date of space.
Date shifting in space templates
Space templates can have a predefined start date and end date. Usually, it is not the specific dates that are important here, but the distances between them.
Possibly space template has also cards with relative card dates or time-based automations. When you create a new space based on a space template, the platform can automatically shift all the space and card dates relative to a custom date you choose.
Example: The project that should take a month:
- The space template has a timeframe from January 1 to January 31.
- You select April 25 as the new start date.
- KanBo shifts everything forward — the space will now runs from April 25 to May 25.
This helps reuse structured project timelines without manually recalculating every deadline.
Space template dates will be rescheduled according to the following rules when creating a space:
- Setting the start date only – then it is compatible only with forward date shifting
- Setting the end date only – then it is compatible only with backward date shifting
- Setting the start date and end date – then it is compatible only with forward date shifting
If you don't specify space start and end dates when you create a space based on the space templates, the new space will have the exact space template dates.
Adding and editing space dates
Only space owners can add and edit space dates.
Space dates can be set when creating space. You can also add them later in the Space details.
To edit space dates:
- Open the space.
- On the space top bar, go to More (the three-dots menu).
- Select
Space details.
- Select the start or end date.
- Select the date from the calendar.
Changing the space dates after the space has been created from the space template does not affect the card dates.

Removing space dates
Only space owners can remove space dates.
To remove space dates:
- Open the space.
- On the space top bar, go to More (the three-dots menu).
- Select
Space details.
- Hover over the start or end date, and then go to More (the three-dots menu).
- Select Remove.
