Next and Previous Card Relation
This post is also available in: Deutsch
In this article:
Overview
Card relations are connections between cards. One of them is the parent-child relation.
This relation is a logical dependency between cards. The previous card must be completed before the next card can begin. This illustrates the cause-and-effect sequence between tasks. Time is the essence of this relation.

In other words, the previous card should go to Completed card status so that work on the next card can be started.
Next and previous card relations are time-dependent. The previous card must be completed before the next card can begin.
Cards in the next-previous relation are visualized with icons:
previous card
next card
Information about the existence of cards linked by a next-previous relation is located on the top bar of the card.

Example: The Printouts card has 3 previous cards and 1 next card.
You can create relations between cards from different spaces and workspaces.
In practice, this means that the previous card can be located in a space that is associated with one department of the organization, while a next is located in a space that is associated with a completely different department.

Each card can be a task for a different department and have different people responsible for the task. In addition, a card can have several next and previous cards.
Adding and removing card relations
You can create relations between existing cards or create new related cards from the current card level. For your convenience, you can add and remove card relations in many places in KanBo. Go to the article about adding card relations or removing card relations to learn more.

Example: One of the places where you can add a previous card is the top card bar.
You can also add and remove the next-previous card relation in the Gantt Chart view.
Parent-child card relation in different space views
Kanban view and List view are two basic views in which cards are grouped by specific categories. However, you can highlight the next-previous relations in these views if they are relevant to you.
You can expand the previous cards on the card front. All you need to do is select its icon. Remember to add this card detail option in the space display settings.

Another view that makes the next-previous relations visible is the Gantt Chart view. If you work a lot with relations of this kind, you definitely need to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of this space view.
You can add the previous-next card relation by dragging and dropping. See the example below.

Example: Creating the next-previous relation between the Windfarm and Hydropower cards in the Gantt Chart view.
The most important feature in the next-previous relation are dates in cards. The due date of the previous card must be earlier than the start date of the next card. Otherwise, cards will be marked with an orange exclamation mark. Observe these dependencies in the Gantt Chart view.

Example: The Printouts card has 3 previous cards and 1 next card.
